Fragments of Courage (John and his Skull)

Project Type

Documentary

Date

May 2019

Role

Photographer

Location

Clapham - Uk

In May 2019, I had the profound opportunity to photograph John, a remarkable individual whose journey embodies resilience and strength. John had undergone brain surgery, during which a portion of his skull was removed for the operation. This pivotal moment in his life inspired me to create a visual narrative that honors not only his experience but also the universal theme of courage.

The series captures intimate moments of John holding his skull, juxtaposed with portraits showcasing where it was taken out. Through these images, I aimed to convey the physical reality of his experience while highlighting the spirit of triumph that radiated from him during our session. Despite the challenges he faced, John was in great spirits, reminding me that courage can take many forms and often manifests in the most unexpected ways.

Utilizing my Mamiya RZ67 camera and Kodak Portra 400 film, I sought to create a visual language that resonates with viewers on both emotional and intellectual levels. Each frame serves as a reminder of the human spirit's ability to endure and find beauty even amidst adversity. The soft tones and rich colors of the film medium add depth to John’s portraits, capturing not just his physical form but the essence of his character.

This project has become a pivotal part of my exploration of courage within my work, illustrating how vulnerability and strength coexist. John’s story is not merely about his medical journey; it is a celebration of life, resilience, and the spirit of “Mettle” that connects us all. I hope that through these images, viewers will reflect on their own experiences of courage and the moments that define them.

"Fragments of Courage" stands as a testament to the power of storytelling through photography. It serves to remind us that every individual has a unique story to share—one that deserves to be seen and heard. John's narrative is one of inspiration, and I hope it resonates with others who face their own struggles, encouraging them to embrace their journeys with the same spirit of courage that John exemplifies.
