Notting Hill Carnival (2018 - Ongoing)
Since 2018, I’ve been documenting the vibrant and colorful energy of the Notting Hill Carnival, one of Europe’s largest cultural celebrations. This personal project focuses on both the dynamic parade performances and intimate street portraits of attendees, utilizing a mix of color and black-and-white photography alongside 35mm film and digital techniques to capture the authenticity of the moment.
This ongoing project celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean diaspora and the unity the carnival fosters among diverse communities from across the UK and Europe. The blend of color and black-and-white imagery allows me to explore different emotional tones and perspectives, creating a more nuanced visual narrative that reflects the diverse experiences of participants.
As I navigate the challenges of documenting such a high-energy event, my approach emphasizes connection and storytelling. Each interaction with a subject becomes an opportunity to capture their unique story, contributing to a larger tapestry that illustrates the carnival's significance as a celebration of culture, resilience, and community spirit. This project serves not only as a visual documentation of the event but also as a personal exploration of identity and belonging within a multicultural context.
Through my lens, I aim to convey the essence of the carnival—the joy, the movement, and the sense of togetherness that it inspires. My work invites viewers to reflect on the power of cultural expression and the stories behind the faces that make the Notting Hill Carnival a truly special event.
